We spend a third of our lives in bed. This is a lot of time wrapped up in our sheets, breathing in our pillows, duvets and mattresses. The Floks idea started when I was struggling with my sleep, clutching an old wool blanket that would never not be on the end of my bed. I asked myself: What are we breathing in for a third of our life? What is it really made up of? Where does this go at the end of its life – landfill?
The problem with conventional bedding
Most bedding on the market is made from synthetic materials or conventionally grown cotton, both of which take a toll on the environment. Traditional cotton farming is water-intensive, pesticide-heavy, and contributes to soil degradation. Meanwhile, synthetic fabrics—like polyester and microfiber—are derived from fossil fuels, shedding microplastics into waterways every time they’re washed.
A better way to sleep
Sustainable bedding isn’t just better for the Earth; it’s better for you. Natural, responsibly sourced materials—like organic cotton, linen, and especially wool—offer breathability, durability, and comfort without the environmental guilt. Organic fibres are grown without harmful pesticides, use less water, and support healthier ecosystems.
Why wool is the ultimate sustainable choice
Wool stands out as a top-tier choice for sustainable bedding, offering numerous benefits for both you and the planet. Unlike synthetic fillings, wool is entirely natural, renewable, and biodegradable, ensuring that it won’t contribute to landfill waste or ocean pollution. Sourced ethically from sheep, wool replenishes annually, making it one of the most sustainable bedding materials available. At the end of it’s long and useful life, it will biodegrade and add nutrients back into the soil.
For sleepers, wool bedding provides superior temperature regulation, keeping you warm in the winter and cool in the summer by naturally adjusting to your body’s needs. This is the main reason that wool is scientifically proven to help you sleep better. It’s also moisture-wicking, drawing excess humidity away to keep your bedding fresh and dry. Hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites and mould, wool creates a healthier sleep environment—free from synthetic chemicals and allergens.
