New to natural bedding? Here's where to start.

New to natural bedding? Here's where to start.

If you’re making the move to natural bedding, you’re not just buying a better night’s sleep—you’re supporting UK craftsmanship, reducing your environmental footprint, and investing in your wellbeing.

Floks was born from a desire to create bedding that gives you the deep, restorative sleep that your body and mind need, and deserve.

Sleep is the foundation of wellness

Before we talk about bedding, let’s talk about sleep.

Along with nutrition and movement, deep restorative sleep is the cornerstone of almost everything your body does to keep you well. From hormone regulation and immune function to memory processing and emotional stability, sleep is where true healing begins.

Just one poor night of sleep can impact your mood, weaken your immune system, and impair your ability to concentrate or manage stress. Over time, the effects run deeper — influencing everything from chronic and auto-immune diseases, inflammation and digestion to mental health and metabolic balance.

But while many of us invest in supplements, skincare or meditation apps, we often overlook something more fundamental, the environment we sleep in. It was this realisation along with a questioning of what we were sleeping on and under that led to Floks being born; read more of Sophie's sleep story

Why what you sleep on (and in) matters

Our bedding — the duvet, mattress, pillows, and sheets that surround us — forms our immediate sleep environment. And yet, we rarely stop to consider what those materials are made of.

Many conventional bedding products rely heavily on synthetics: polyester fillings, memory foam, chemically treated fabrics. These materials might be cheap and easy to mass produce, but they’re not what your body instinctively recognises as safe, breathable, or nurturing.

Synthetic materials often:

  • Trap heat and moisture
  • Interfere with natural temperature regulation
  • Off-gas volatile compounds (especially when new)
  • Provide poor airflow and surface tension

The result? Overheating. Sweating. Allergic reactions. Disrupted sleep.

Why choose wool over down and feather bedding?

Down and feather duvets have been around for centuries, and they’re soft and warm, but wool has a number of advantages over down and feather:

Adapts to your temperature. Wool duvets are heavier than down duvets, but this is repaid in comfort and coolness. We've been using wool duvets for centuries. Wool duvets are better at managing moisture, ensuring we don't overheat while we sleep.

Wool is moisture-wicking. It soaks up moisture. Unlike down, which tends to trap heat and moisture, wool adapts to your body temperature throughout the night—no sweaty wakeups, no cold spots.

Naturally anti-allergy. Feathers can trap allergens and dust mites, which is bad news if you're prone to allergies or asthma. Wool, on the other hand, is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, mould, and mildew—making it a healthier choice for sensitive sleepers.

Sustainable. At Floks, our wool is sourced from happy British Cheviot sheep and processed here in the UK. No cruel practices, no air-freighted fillers. Down, by contrast, often raises ethical concerns about animal welfare and traceability, especially when imported from overseas.

Low maintenance luxury. Wool bedding doesn't need to be washed as often as synthetic or feather-filled bedding. Its natural structure resists odours and stays fresher for longer—so you can rest easy, night after night.

By contrast, natural fibres like wool, hemp, and organic cotton breathe, adapt, and support your body’s own rhythms. They're not just better for the planet — they're better for your physiology.

Wool: your natural sleep companion

When we created Floks, we centred everything around wool — a fibre both humble and high-performing.

Why wool?

  • Thermoregulating: Wool keeps you at the right temperature by absorbing and releasing moisture. It creates a stable sleep environment that prevents overheating or chilling — a major cause of nighttime wakeups.
  • Hypoallergenic and antibacterial: Unlike feathers or synthetic fibres, wool naturally resists dust mites, mould and bacteria, making it perfect for sensitive skin and lungs.
  • Breathable and moisture-wicking: Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling damp — helping your skin and nervous system stay calm throughout the night.
  • Fully natural and renewable: Our wool is fully traceable, sourced from high-quality farms in Yorkshire and processed entirely here in the UK. It’s biodegradable, low-impact, and completely free from plastic-based fillings or chemical treatments.

And wool doesn’t just feel good — it’s proven to help you sleep better. A study by the University of Sydney found that people sleeping in wool bedding fell asleep faster, had more consistent sleep, and even experienced lower heart rates during the night compared to those using synthetic materials.

The body-mind connection with nature

We’re not separate from nature — we’re a part of it. And when we bring natural materials into our homes and sleep spaces, something powerful happens.

Your nervous system responds instantly to touch, temperature, and texture. Natural fibres — especially untreated, breathable ones — are more likely to signal safety, calm, and rest to the body. That helps lower cortisol (your stress hormone), deepen breathing, and support the parasympathetic nervous system — the part of you responsible for true rest and repair.

It’s physiological.

When you sleep in bedding made from real, natural materials — without synthetics, off-gassing, or coatings — your body recognises that safety. You relax more easily. You sleep more deeply. You wake up feeling more like yourself. The whole team at Floks has experienced this, and we love to help our customers create their sleep sanctuary at home.

And it’s not just about what’s inside. Your duvet filling matters. But so does what touches your skin every night.

The perfect pairing: Hemp and organic cotton bed linen

That’s why we pair our wool-filled bedding with natural hemp and organic cotton linen — for softness, breathability, and a tactile quality that feels grounded and gentle so that you can have an all-natural sleep experience.

  • Hemp is one of the most sustainable fibres in the world. It grows quickly, uses very little water, and requires no pesticides. It’s durable, antibacterial, and ultra-breathable — perfect for people who run warm at night.
  • Organic cotton brings familiar softness and comfort, grown without harsh chemicals or toxic dyes. It’s better for your skin, your lungs, and the farmers who grow it.

Together, they create bed linen with a beautiful high GSM—meaning it feels slightly heavier and more luxurious than standard bed sheets—and an elegant drape that mimics hotel-style bedding (but without the plastic). We like to call it the best of both.

People often ask whether hemp or linen is better for bed linen, and there’s a reason we chose hemp. Both are natural, but we had to choose hemp. It is a miracle fibre. It needs very little water, improves soil health and regenerates the land, and effectively sequesters the carbon (even more than trees). But it’s also strong and durable - eight times stronger than linen, and therefore will last longer, an important factor for us.

Sustainability as standard, not a slogan

We are a belief- led small business, rooted in the belief that sustainability and luxury should never be at odds.

All our wool products are made in the UK, from wool sourcing to final product assembly. That means lower transport emissions, full traceability, and a deep respect for traditional British manufacturing.

We don’t chase trends. We don’t overproduce. We create slowly, intentionally, and beautifully — because we believe that the best things are made to last, not to landfill.

So… where should you start?

If you’re curious about switching to natural bedding, you don’t need to replace everything at once. Start with one piece and see how it feels.

  • A wool pillow can transform the way your head and neck feel supported at night. Our luxury wool pillows have a removable, adjustable and fluffable wool inner core and a luxury organic cotton outer.
  • Hemp and GOTS-certified organic cotton bed linen lets you feel the difference natural fibres make — right against your skin.
  • A duvet made with British wool can replace overheating with pure, balanced comfort, all year round. Ours is award-winning and we think you will love it.
  • A mattress topper or enhancer is a great way to upgrade your current mattress if you’re not ready to buy a new one. It adds a pure, natural wool layer between you and your mattress as well as being deeply and luxuriously comfortable.

Often, it only takes one good night’s sleep to feel the shift.

We believe natural materials don’t just perform better — they feel better. Not just to the touch, but on a deeper, sensory level. Like your body recognises something it didn’t know it needed.

When you sleep in natural fibres, your skin can breathe, and your temperature self-adjusts. Your mind slows down. You’re no longer fighting the synthetic — returning to something human, tactile, and beautifully simple.

We call it the Floks feeling, and we’d love for you to try us out. Our duvets come with a 30-night sleep guarantee so you can try it out for yourself.

What our customers say.

"I’m not sure words can truly do justice to how exceptional Folks’s new bed linens are. Incredibly soft, they strike that rare balance of being both cooling and warming at once — almost as if they float above your skin rather than rest against it. Buttery smooth and impossibly comfortable, they’ve completely transformed our sleep. My husband and I have never rested so well, and I genuinely can’t imagine going back to anything else. An absolute dream."

"Fantastic products which arrived the following day after placing my order. Made up my bed with them as soon as they were delivered and absolutely love them. I will never go back to having any synthetic fabrics on my bed. The items I purchased are so comfortable to sleep on and, more importantly, I no longer suffer with night sweats!"
