The Great Sleep Shift

This World Sleep Day we have taken some time to reflect on the changing landscape in the sleep world.

Since we started the Floks journey to improve the nation’s sleep in a fully sustainable way, the understanding of the value of sleep has increased dramatically. From Fitbits and other technology through to books, talks and podcasts, it is very hard to avoid the simple fact, that sleep is the cornerstone of a happy, healthy life. On the flip side, lack of sleep can lead to serious problems with physical and mental health.

The mental health charity Mind shows the impact of poor sleep very well.

How lack of sleep effects the mind

In his book ‘Why We Sleep’, Matthew Walker says that there is nothing we can do to improve our health more than increasing the quantity and quality of our sleep. Better sleep leads to short term gains such as increased memory and creativity and helps us keep our emotions under control. In the longer term it makes us more resilient to a range of serious physical illnesses and conditions and will help us live longer.

The best bridge between despair and hope is a good nights sleep

His tips for 8 hours of sleep each night are:

  1. Develop a schedule – try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
  2. Try to keep your weekend sleep times as normal as possible – if you have a good routine in the week but then stay up late at the weekend it will impact your circadian rhythm which can permanently impact your sleep patterns.
  3. Avoid screen time before bed – consider making your bedroom a ‘screen free zone’ – reading, stretching, or journalling are great other activities to do before bed instead.
  4. Try and eat, exercise and drink early – if you can, try and give yourself 3-4 hours between your evening meal and your bedtime.

We believe in the product we make and we believe in the properties that wool has that can help improve sleep. A Floks pillow, duvet or topper is thermoregulating, antimicrobial, fully sustainable, and biodegradable and we love receiving feedback from our customers who say they are sleeping much better (some even send us their sleep score improvements which are amazing).

If you are new to wool bedding or want to know more about how it feels then please reach out to us at and we will do our best to help. However this World Sleep Day our message is that, whatever works for you, if its wool, down or synthetic, we encourage you to understand and appreciate the value of a good night’s sleep.
